It has been one year since I shared with you my predictions for 2010 and for fun, my worst predictions. Here they are again along with the results:
year-of-tiger-predictions-2010
Here are my top 10 predictions for the year of the Tiger.

1. Asia will BOOM, led by SE Asia, China and India.
WINNER! Asia continues to boom and at a record pace.

2. Eastern Europe will continue to recover and soar
WINNER! Eastern Europe recovered while much of Western Europe is level or having debt problems.

3. Training and Speaking will be HOT as HR and C-Level people feel the need to ‘catch up’ over what was ‘neglected’ last year
SPLIT DECISION: Although a bit slow in the beginning of 2010, Training has gone HOT since September… in Asia. USA and Europe is still fairly slow.

4. Sales and Marketing will get more cash in their budgets
SPLIT DECISION: Most markets its a WINNER but some markets in Europe and the Americas, the money is just trickling in.

5. USA will still be pretty flat with healthcare and IT leading their recovery
WINNER!

6. Business in Oz will be strong by end of Q1 and NZ strong by June
WINNER! The Oz dollar is worth MORE than the greenback.

7. IF China curtails ‘entertaining’ at government (proposed now), it will spill over to private sectors and kill some F & B businesses, if not… ‘Party on!’
NEUTRAL: This was like a weather prediction… 10% chance of rain, it rains… 10% accuracy. Nothing happened. Still drinking red wine to the new year.

8. US dollar will be flat but stable until 2012, then drop like a stone (watch for China’s sell-off of $2 Trillion greenbacks or oil getting pegged to another currency)
MISS: It has not been flat. It fell against most currencies mid-year and then stabilized for the last few months.

9. Recovery will come from emerging markets and they will fuel recovery but at their ‘values’, not foreign values (they buy, sell and produce in their own economic scales, not at the scales or prices first world is used to) Hence, it may be easier for 2nd world to sell to these nations than first world
WINNER!

10. Gen Y is starting to move into entry level management. Watch for changes in leadership styles
WINNER!

SEE HOW I DID HERE: Smile Maker: Michael’s Top 10 Worst Predictions for the Year of the Tiger!

6. MOE stops testing students and adopts a new, “All should pass.” policy.
MISS! MISS! MISS!

Last minute Christmas gifts

Christmas-gift
Last minute Christmas gifts

If you have someone left on your list and can’t think of what to give them, give them the gift of your time. Print a voucher that says, “Good for a lunch and a walk around the park.” , “Good for a foot rub at the end of the day.”, “Good for 2 hours with mom to do whatever you want.” or “Good for night out and I’ll watch the kids.” Few people give of themselves and it can mean so much more than a quick credit card swipe. Think about giving YOURSELF this Christmas.

For fellow Christians, may the peace of Christ rest upon you this Christmas season.
For my non-Christian friends, may this time of year bring you peace, love and joy to you and your families.
For ALL: May 2011 be your BEST year yet and may all peoples of the world learn to love each other and live in peace and harmony.

Smile maker: Which are you?
Some people cause happiness wherever they go. Others… when they go.
Some light up the room when they enter. Others…when they leave.

Air Travel Tips

Air Travel Tips

air travel tips

With the school holidays here in Singapore and many people traveling either for work or to visit family over Christmas, the new year and Lunar new year, Here are some air travel tips to make travel, less travail, particularly over long distances.

1. Get some sleep: Use “The Kit” to help you sleep on the plane; a series of sleeping aids you buy in advance or grab when I board the plane. Include: GOOD ear plugs, an inflateable pillow to avoid neck kinks (not necessary in most business class seats with ‘wings’), eye shades, comfy slippers, lip balm, facial cream, a light zippered jacket to regulate personal body temperature, a blanket (on legs only) and pillow for low back, take pressure off the legs or to act as insulation from cold window-wall of plane.

2. The right seat is everything. I have varied my departure from Asia on a 3 week trip by as much as 3 days to get the right seat. As all airlines are different and have different configurations, you need to go to SeatGuru.com

On most airlines, ANY seat in First Class is fine. If flying business class, most transPacific airlines window seats in the nose of the plane or against the bulkhead give you more freedom to get up and out at any time but still let you lie undisturbed when you want to sleep. You also get served first for all F&B and cleared up first after the meal. On some flights, middle row bulkhead BC affords you the same advantages.

AVOID like the plague the seats next to the toilets… sheer HELL with noise and smell.

If flying KLM or other carriers where BC is upstairs, I’d suggest the bulkhead or exit aisles.

For SAA, the only suggestion is if you must fly coach, take 52 A or K… window seats and only 2 of you, plus you have raft storage on your side to act as a shelf.

3. Passport, Frequent flyer, hotel frequent guest and rental car numbers printed on one sheet of paper with 4 colour copies of your passport key pages on the other side of the page and place them hidden inside of every bag you carry. If you have even one bag left after being robbed, you can get a new passport quicker. Sending a copy to yourself on your Google account and never deleting it also gives you access to your documents from any computer in the world. Also, no need to carry all those bulky cards. If plans change and you take another airline or stay at another hotel, you have the privliges and points you deserve. If you have a camera phone, keep a copy of all these details in your phone as well.

4. Faster Immigration, move to the line (cue) next to the special row for flight crew. If there is someone at the immigration desk, when flight crew is not going through immigration, many times they wave in the next person from the closest line. This can make the line closest to the customs line move TWICE as fast as the other lines.

NEXT TIME I’ll share more travel tips.

Smile Maker: Murphy’s Laws for airline passengers

  1. No flight ever leaves on time unless you are running late and need the delay to make the flight.
  2. If you are running late for a flight, it will depart from the farthest gate in the terminal.
  3. If you arrive very early for a flight, it inevitably will be delayed and after a long delay, possibly cancelled.
  4. Flights never leave from Gate #1 at any terminal in the world.
  5. If you must work on your flight, you will experience extreme turbulence as soon as you open your laptop.
  6. If stuck in a middle seat, you can determine who has the aisle and the window seats next to you while you are still in the boarding area. Just look for the two largest passengers.
  7. Only passengers seated in window seats ever have to get up to go to the lavatory.
  8. The crying baby on board your flight is always seated next to you or in front of you on its mother’s shoulder, mouth pointed directly at you.
