Career Success : The Four Compass Points for Raising Your Career
Michael Podolinsky, trainer and certified speaking professional of Podolinsky International shares with Human Resources on what he feels are the four key “compass points” that can help you achieve success in your career.
The four compass points are:
G: Generalist
S: Specialist
T: Team Player
S: Self-reliant
Podolinsky was speaking at yesterday’s Raise Your Game 2010 event, which was organised by Asia Professional Speakers – Singapore.
The #1 thing you can do to advance your career is to get GOOD at public speaking! The people who get promoted are not always the most brilliant, but they can articulate and express themselves better than the average person.
You will learn to speak confidently, articulately and eloquently.
In Vegas and most comedy clubs that are NOT filming for TV, the lights are up more. If you have a diva singing, you want it dark so the audience is silent and focuses on the diva. For comedy, they turn the house lights up. Why? So people can see faces. It’s hard to laugh if you can’t see other people’s faces. The laugh gets ’stuck’ at the lips.
If the lights are dim at a comedy club, it’s to make people drinking feel more relaxed and drink more. NOT for the benefit of the comic.
When the shoot a TV show like The Tonight Show and Leno or Connan are doing their stand-up, the lights are full on. When someone is singing, the lighting drops and is more ‘dramatic.

Mike Podolinsky TakeOut Comedy Club Singapore Open Mic 210709
TakeOut Comedy presents the FIRST and ONLY Stand Up Comedy Open Mic in Singapore.
I watched a TV series years ago on PBS back in OOOSA with grand master of comedy Alan King interviewing the funniest comics in Las Vegas and Hollywood. He asked, “Is going crude and dirty necessary?” A young comic said, “No…. but it sure helps.”
Then Tim Conway, the Emmy Award winning star, movie star and stand up pro said, “No, I think it hurts.”
Alan King said, “That sounds like a challenge.” The two comics faced off against each other. The young guy used ’shock and awe’ tactics, F’in this and F’in that. He got a big laugh albeit nervous laugh. (this WAS public television)
Then Tim Conway gets up and tells a joke; clean as a whistle. He massages it, stair steps it, works it, builds, repeats, builds and BAM… they could not stop laughing for 90 seconds or more and then clapped for another 30 seconds; eclipsing the other ‘comic’ with more laughter and applause than he had gotten INCLUDING his joke time.
Just after 20 years in Singapore, I’ve really grown to love the fact that I can have dinner with my family in almost any restaurant, coffee shop or tavern or sit in a bus and not hear raw sewage spewed out from the mouth of the guy behind me or at the next table. I LOVE the idea of comedy coming to Singapore.
To me, after 20 years in living in a really clean Singapore environment, I was shocked that this is what the English language has evolved into. My personal measure is simply, “Are our words uplifting and improving the world we live in?”
