Hi Hussien

These are two very different skills. Take the extreme. A mute person may be an outstanding writer...incapable of speech. On the other extreme, I've heard amazing speakers that when they write, they use too many words like they were giving to 2 day workshop. These are separate skills. They CAN and often DO compliment one another but can also be mutually exclusive. Thanks for asking and God bless you

Are they the same or different? If a person can write well he can speak well as ABCD. Any truth in it? I am curious.

Hi Li Chow
Great to hear from you and reality, nothing to fear. I have no 'fear' that I will ruin my kids. Will I make mistakes? I've already made over 100. But as Friedrich Nietzsche said, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." As long as we balance our 'mistakes' with tons of love, listening and laughter (the 3 L's) and are there to show support, we should be okay. I don't think there is ever 'enough' time with them. I DO try to date each child and my bride at least once a week one-on-on and fix breakfast for my kids at least 25 times a month, sitting and listing to them and listen to my bride at least 4 or 5 nights a week.
Parents is another matter. As mentioned... as a kid, it was out of my control. As an adult, I took my dad out on fishing trips, weekends away and he lived with me for a year and a half. I took mom and dad to Australia and New Zealand for a month and got to see them have some real fun and fine dining. I was unable to change my youth but could take some control as an adult.
Money is not the point here with either. It's carving out the most expensive and valuable gift we can give anyone... our time. Say 'no' to the phone and distractions and say 'yes' to undivided, uninterrupted time with the people who matter to us. This may sound radical in today's context but I own my phone and computer... neither owns me. I can shut them down at any time of my choosing and focus on my family.

God bless you and we both can be better than our dads.

Thank you Toby. So true, you cannot train someone who hates their job.
What IS true, is that with training, people feel more pride in what they do. Example: One of our clients, Westin Hotels has a 2 hour video on how to mop a floor. I was a janitor in my secondary school and university days to pay for my education so I thought I knew how to mop a floor. I was amazed at what the video taught. Surfactants and how to make water wetter, how different surfaces required different cleaners, the care of mop fibres, mop fibers have many surfaces in each fibre as each is a cleaning surface, how often to change the water, which surfactants needed rinsing afterward, saftey signs and their placement, how long to keep safety signs up as a function of humidity and surface absorption, sealing floors VS. waxing and more. By the time someone who hired on as a 'cleaner' learns their job, they see themselves as "Safety officer", "Health officer", "Employee and Customer Care Specialist" and more. Eduction (not just ad hoc 'training') leads to adult development and hence, true pride in work. The NY sales pro's attitude was probably inborn, yet someone had to teach her how to use it. Like a great artist has a mentor, she must have had hers. This is what we teach in my SIM programme on Training, Mentoring and Coaching. All 3 must work in harmony. Thank you Toby for your awesome story!

HI Micheal,

"our retail workers in Singapore are woefully ill equipped." This is the true scenario.

It is not the training, etc, etc, it is the passion one needs to have in the job.

My wife and I went to a New York Jean store, the sales girls are fantastic, well trained, well mannered, my wife don't speak English, the sales girl told her not to worry, and explain all types of designs, colors and fabric. She made her tries on all designs which she thinks my wife should look good and comfortable in them. Could you imagine we spent almost two hours and just bought one pair of Jeans. The sales girl is a graduate and she say she loves her job and appreciate her customers willingness to try her suggestions. She told us to come back again if we are not satisfied! What more do you want?

dear Oluwafemi

The funny thing is, I don't know HOW to do it. I just know it works. YOU can just do it and it happens. You mentioned, "Please get me on the path to service to humanity. I am a born again christian and a church worker, but its like am not yet getting it right, since money is not there yet." First off, the word 'Success' is in the Bible 29 times but only ONCE refers to material success. The rest is success for His Kingdom. So are you winning souls and serving Him? If so, you are already a success. Second, we cannot separate our lives into boxes. Everything is interrelated. Men, more than women, think in terms of boxes. I'm at work. I'm in my car. I'm at home. I'm watching TV. I'm with my wife. I'm with my kids. Boxes. This is not what we need to live a life in harmony or in service. All must flow together like soup. Life IS soup (oooohhh, you just gave me a new blog post and a way to explain my productivity book better). Soup is all cooked together so vitamins, flavours all merge. You might be chewing on a piece of chicken but it is soup flavored. The bit of carrot is soup flavored. Hence, if you serve people, you must care for them physically, mentally, socially, economically and spiritually. When all is in harmony, it just flows. If you only cloister yourself in a room and pray, don't expect riches. If you serve, share, work, pray, love, give and grow, you will get more yourself. I can't promise it will be a big bank account. When I said the money followed my decision to serve others, I got more money because more people wanted to pay to hear me. When I share more information openly, I sold more books. When you double or triple your value to the church you work at, won't they pay you more? God bless you and enjoy the journey.

"I focused on CHANGING LIVES. Once the focus was on service, those who needed the service started flocking to me.." The above quote was copied from your mail to me this morning it touched deeply. Mike this is exactly my ultimate desire in life, but how do I go about it, where do I start. Definitely services unto God and mankind would definitely attract success and great reward, since what you get from the society is determined by what you give to the society. Please get me on the path to service to humanity. I am a born again christian and a church worker, but its like am not yet getting it right, since money is not there yet... any way forward, your reply eagerly awaited.thank you for your e-mails all the while Yours Oluwafemi

Thank you Dr. Al and Beth.
We all make mistakes and yet should live without regrets as we cannot change the past and we are not the same person now we were then. Hence, our decisions might be very different now with our increased wisdom and discernment. Setting priorities and sticking with them just helps us avoid the biggest pain any human being will ever have to endure... the pain of regret. (I could have... I might have... I should have...) Thank you both for your comments and encouragement. God bless you both.
