Time and Stress Management : Time and Life

Time and Stress Management : Time and Life

Time is LIFE! These amazing words by Dr. Alan Lakein, author of “How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life” instruct us to change everything we are doing. If Time is LIFE, wasting time is wasting our very lives. Spending it on ‘junk food’ when a wholesome buffet of opportunity is before us seems tragic at best. Here are 3 Action Steps to get more out of your life:

Time and Stress Management Tip #1:
Stop giving your life away to people who do not deserve it. Say “NO” to anything or anyone with requests not aligned with your priorities. This will not make you popular with some people but will greatly improve your quality of life.

Time and Stress Management Tip #2:
Start every day with a detailed To-Do List to ensure your time is not wasted. Otherwise, every text message, email, phone call or interruption becomes your ‘priority’; taking away time and life.

Time and Stress Management Tip #3:
Plan time for planning. No captain of a ship or airplane sets sail or flies without a clear destination in mind and a map of the most efficient route to take. Putting a few minutes into your day to plan your next day can transform your life from hectic and hellish to one that satisfies and soars.

Life is nothing more than time. Throw away your time and you throw away your ….

Smile Maker for the week: Who moved?
An elderly couple were driving in their old truck with a flat front seat. They spotted a young couple in a new truck with a similar seat, but the girl was sitting right next to the driver. The elderly woman remarked how romantic it looked and said to her husband, “Remember when we used to sit that close in this old truck?” The husband replied, “Well… I haven’t moved.”

Overcoming FEAR of Public Speaking! 3 Quick and Easy Tips

Public speaking is something everyone has to do from time to time. For some, it is a joy and an opportunity to shine. For others, a torment and a drudgery. Here are 3 quick tips to help you overcome the FEAR of public speaking.

First, remember FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. We think they, the audience, is not on our side. RUBBISH! I have never gone before ANY audience that was hoping I would be bad. Every audience wants you to be GOOD and wants you to be effective and interesting. In other words, they are on your side!

Second, NEVER EVER speak to a CROWD. Crowds are tough audiences. Speak to INDIVIDUALS. It is easy for most of us to speak to one person at a time.  That is, speak to just one person in the audience at a time. Speak to a friendly face for 30 seconds. Then look towards another friendly face and speak to him or her for 30 seconds. By speaking to just ONE person at a time, you minimise your fear and maximise the impact upon your audience.

Third, look at those who smile more. Happy, pleasant people feed you energy and relax you. Never look at those who appear to be sucking on a lime. They are the black-holes of your energy and enthusiasm.

If you focus on these 3 suggestions,  you are instantly a more confident and capable speaker. In future blogs we’ll cover dozens more ideas for speaking and presenting as well as ideas for career development, sales, time and stress management, leadership and team building.

Smile Maker: How can a wife tell when her husband is dead?

The TV is still on but no more beer is getting drunk.

You still don’t see him but the pay checks stop.

He starts to smell worse than his socks.

He no longer breaks wind.

You finally get caught-up with the dirty laundry.

You get your first good night’s sleep in years!

8 Ways To Reduce Your Stress

Stress is our bodies reaction to any demand placed upon it. So if you want to have a favourable reaction to the stressors in your life, here are 8 ways to reduce your stress.

1. Breathe. Take 8 deep breaths when you start feeling stressed. You will lower your heart rate and relax your mind and body.

2. Rub yourself the right way. Massage where you are most tense. Feet, neck, shoulders…as far as you can reach or touch. 2-5 minutes of self-massage can really make a difference in your tension.

3. Passion. Remember that making love with your spouse is good for both of you. I releases a whole pharmacy of positive chemicals into the bloodstream, boosting the immune system, lowering cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure. It even burns off 600 calories per hour!

4. Forgive someone. If you harbour anger or resentment, it hurts you, not necessarily the person you are angry at. Forgive them and you can move on in your life and end up living longer. Note: THEY need not accept your forgiveness…that is THEIR issue.

5. Take a hike! Walk off your stress at lunch. I do this when conducting full day seminars. I eat with my participants for 30 minutes and then walk for 25, clean-up and the afternoon is always better. Also any exercise in general will strip away body tension and anxiety.

6. Nap. Cranky kids take a nap and wake up as human beings. When you get cranky, maybe you need a nap.

7. Relax with music. Put on the headphones to tune out the world or if no one is home, turn up the sound system and listen to some music you find soothing. Can be baroque classical or hip-hop if you find it relaxing.

8. Pray. The power of prayer is well documented to lower heart rate, calm your senses and help you find peace and tranquility in life. I START everyday with prayer, END every day with prayer, pray before every meal, every speech or seminar and before every major or stressful decision. When God is my pilot, being co-pilot is so much easier.
